J-Link on the Tools menu in Internet Explorer

In the J-Link dialog box, there are 6 tabs: Rule, Style, Advanced, Account, Update and About. Click the title of the tab that you wish to check or change.

Rule tab

Most users will never need to change these settings.

Rule files for J-Link determine which references are recognised and the website to which the links point. The free version of J-Link is supplied with only one rule file, justcite.rlc. Justis Publishing can produce custom rule files for J-Link, and this option allows you to select your custom rule file.

Skip files for J-Link specify parts of a web page that should be ignored. For example, you can tell J-Link not to add links in titles by specifying the appropriate start and end tags in the jlink.tag skip file. The contents of the skip file should be plain text, with each pair of tags on a new line, for example:

<!--BEGIN J-Link NO Processing --><!-- END J-Link NO Processing -->
<h1></h1>
<h2></h2>
<h3></h3>
<h4></h4>
<h5></h5>

If you are using Windows Vista, you may not be able to edit or add files in the Program Files\Justis\J-Link\ folder, and so you will need to use a different folder.

Click the Apply button if you want to also change settings on any other tabs.

Click the OK button if you have finished setting options.

Style tab

Users of the free version of JustCite will never need to change these settings. They are needed only by users of custom versions of J-Link.

Update tab

When it looks for references in web pages, J-Link uses several files that help it to recognise case report series, Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments and EU documents. These files need to be updated from time to time, so that J-Link can recognise new references.

We recommend that you leave both boxes unchecked. With these settings, J-Link will notify you when it finds an update, so that you can choose to accept or to cancel it.

If you select the “Update automatically” check box, then J-Link will install updates without notifying you.

If you disable live updates, then you should occasionally click “Update Now” so that J-Link can be brought up-to-date.
